Supported in 2020 by Epic Games and StoryFutures Academy, CreativeXR is looking for immersive SMEs and creative organisations to join its new content innovation acceleration programme. The programme’s open call welcomes creative ideas that explore how immersive technologies can engage and inspire audiences. Successful applicants will receive bespoke mentoring and can expect to receive up to £20,000 in funding to develop a creative prototype with further introductions made to investors.
CreativeXR is set to demonstrate the best of the UK’s creative industries by developing immersive content and experiences.
What is CreativeXR?
Developed by Digital Catapult and Arts Council England in 2017, CreativeXR is the acceleration programme for the arts and culture sector giving creative talent the opportunity to experiment with immersive technologies in new experiences to open up novel ways of engaging and inspiring audiences.
Teams are given tools such as prototype funding, workshops, peer-to-peer learning and access to facilities. Each year as a final phase of the programme, project teams also compete for further production funding with the aim of becoming market-ready and pushing the boundaries of what immersive technologies can offer. To increase confidence in undertaking boundary-pushing R&D, CreativeXR will also engage with technical experts to help develop experimental prototype builds and support the teams throughout their three-month build journey.
In 2020 CreativeXR, will focus on helping teams creatively innovate with the format, develop project impact and build new business models through bespoke mentorship and support from leading experts in the industry. Teams will also showcase and pitch their projects to industry stakeholders at the third annual CreativeXR Showcase and Market (official dates to be confirmed). The event will bring together the national and international immersive community to experience and meet the best of the UK’s creative content creators.

CreativeXR works with the best creative teams to help develop concepts and prototypes of immersive content by offering access to prototype funding (up to £20k), access to the Digital Catapult Immersive Labs, business expertise and series of workshops, the opportunity to participate, pitch and host private demos and meetings with commissioners at the Showcase and Market event and finally to compete for further funding at the end of the prototype period.
Now in its third year, the programme is the first of its kind and has received over 2,000 registrations of interest, 200 applications to the programme and 40 teams taking part in the first two editions.
Three projects from the first CreativeXR cohort premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in the US in 2019, two have won awards at Sandbox Immersive Festival in China, one premiered at Venice VR in 2019 and one is currently exhibiting at the RAF museum in London.
CreativeXR 2020 has got two new exciting supporters: Epic Games and StoryFutures Academy who will be offering bespoke mentorship and workshops throughout the programme, as well as continuous support from both the Digital Catapult and Arts Council England.
