Innovation in Transport Open Call

Summary

In 2020 Metro celebrates its 40th anniversary.  And they want you to play a part in it.

Over 100,000 journeys are taken on Tyne and Wear Metro every day. Do you have a great idea that would benefit Nexus passengers, staff, and communities? Can you inspire more people to make more leisure trips on Metro?

If so, then they want to hear from you.

As part of their 2020 celebration, Nexus have partnered with Digital Catapult North East Tees Valley to reach out to the region’s creative and digital organisations, to hear new ideas and inspire more people to use the Metro. Nexus are looking to appoint a partner to help them develop and deliver something new and exciting, and have both a budget and internal resource to support this project.

Their key message is that Metro is part of everyday life.

Background

40 years on, Metro remains an iconic symbol of our region.  People choose Metro to take them to work, school, university, on days and nights out, to visit friends and family and for shopping and leisure trips. Passengers benefit from Metro’s links with two cities, four major sporting venues, an international airport, two main railway stations and hundreds of visitor attractions.

Nexus are working hard to sustain the reliability of the current ageing fleet and are investing over £300 million in modernising historic infrastructure.  They’re particularly looking forward to the delivery of a brand-new train fleet from 2021.

Meanwhile it’s important that Nexus work hard to encourage people to choose Metro, keeping it part of their everyday life. Nexus’ aim is to build on their existing customer base by engaging passengers more closely and attracting potential new customers.

An everyday service for a lifetime of journeys. Where would we be without it?

What Nexus are looking for:

Nexus want to celebrate the heritage of Metro and the part it has played in the lives of the communities that it has served across Tyne and Wear.  But it isn’t all about the past. They want to look to the future too, to ensure that Metro is best placed to continue to be part of everyday life for decades to come.

Nexus are leaving the creative thinking to you, but are after products, services, games… ideas that will inspire journeys, that will help, inform or entertain their passengers.  Ideas that will help them to stay relevant in a changing world. The budget is up to £25,000.

The Process:

Talk to Nexus about your ideas, along with a schedule of costs for implementation and they’ll select up to three of the best ideas to invest in.  Aside from the cash injection, you’ll benefit from hands-on development support, access to data and market intelligence and the kudos of working with one of the North East’s best known brands.

If you’re successful, they’ll launch your new product, service or idea to our 36 million customers sometime in 2020.
