Careers in tech

Keen to find a role in tech, Badr applied on our Full Stack Development Bootcamp to develop his skillset.

Wanting to continue his personal development for a tech career, Badr enrolled on our Full Stack Development Bootcamp delivered in partnership with Layers Studio. Badr was one of our last graduates for 2024, and after a break over the holidays, we invited him to speak about his experience.

Tech is a competitive industry

Finding a job in tech can be difficult. With many university graduates struggling due to a lack of experience, making it a highly competitive industry when trying to land their first entry position. If many people have a degree, how can you stand out from the crowd?

“I’ve been applying for jobs, but everyone is looking for someone with experience. It’s tough. When I came across SSC, you were advertising bootcamps, and I was looking for a project to develop my skills”.

Showing employers that you are continuously trying to develop your professional skillset through vocational training is a great way to make yourself stand out. Badr’s bootcamp offered training in Full stack development to learn how to use HTML, CSS and PHP coding. We also provided training on how to prepare for and ace an interview with any future employers.

Learning never ends

“When I joined the bootcamp, I had some knowledge of HTML and CSS. I thought it was just going to be about them, but it wasn’t. I learned how to use PHP, Heroku and Vercel.”

Layers Studio helps its clients develop websites that are both functional and visually attractive. Their team of developers are keen to share their experience and knowledge with people looking to enter the digital design sector.

“Throughout the bootcamp, I was shown how to make a visually appealing website using NodeJS, a JavaScript runtime used for backend development. It was a great experience, making new friends to share my ideas with.”

It never hurts to know someone

SSC has been working in the tech sector for over a decade and continues to build relationships and foster a sense of community. Our bootcamps are great for helping people connect with one another, which allows discussions and future relationships.

“I consider myself an introvert, so networking is something I struggle with. The bootcamp helped me as I wanted to talk to people and share my work.”

Throughout the three-week programme, the cohort was tasked with designing an interactive music app, and at the end, attendees presented their work, sharing both their learnings and challenges they’d overcome. Neil Crabtree, our Student Support Leader, delivers a masterclass on how to present yourself in networking opportunities using the growth mindset.

“The bootcamp helped me practice my public speaking skills as I had to present in front of the class. Neil taught us the STAR technique that I applied during my presentation which helped me a lot”.

During the day of our case study interview, Badr delivered a Q&A with the first software development cohort of 2025. He shared his experience with the bootcamp, and how they could take their software development skills to the next stage.

Why should you do a bootcamp in 2025?

Alex Waddell and James Hanson, from Layers Studio, are determined to help people like Badr find employment and help the growth of the North East tech sector.

“I was provided with a lot of resources from Alex and James to help me develop my skills. They were supportive throughout the entire programme”.

Following the completion of the bootcamp, he has continued to develop his skills and been offered an internship with WH Forster as a social media developer. Badr is now hoping to be successful in applying for a junior developer role as part of our Tech Talent Pro team.

Would Badr do the Bootcamp again?

“Absolutely, it’s a free programme; you’ll make new friends and gain experience working with a company. Even if you don’t have much experience you will benefit from it, as they start from the basics so everyone can participate.”
