Careers in tech

When Antonella attended the Tech Talent Live careers fair in June, she had no idea this decision would lead to her receiving a job offer.

After seeing the Eventbrite invitation on Facebook, Antonella had never worked in the tech sector or had any technical abilities. However, this didn’t impact her ability to secure a role at Kerridge Commercial Systems as a Support Analyst, a software company based in Gateshead.

Attending career events is a great way for job seekers to meet employers, source vacancies and find out more about the skills they need to secure employment.

Fortunately,Antonella had been to a couple of career events in the past and always found them extremely useful to her career development. However, she was still new to the North East tech scene.

When she approached Kerridge Commercial Systems, she explained that she was looking for a job and outlined her key skills and experience. Antonella recalls the conversation,

"I was surfing the booths and talking to as many people as I could, utilising the resources I had available. When I spoke to Kerridge Commercial Systems, I explained that I was looking for a role and they were impressed by my resume.
"After that,we arranged a meeting to discuss more about my skills and career goals. Fortunately, they had an opportunity for me to be a Support Analyst, which catered to my skills and offered me the role.
"I’m so glad I attended the careers event. Everyone has made me feel so welcome at Kerridge Commercial Systems.

How do you make the most out of career events?

Antonella’s success proves how useful career events can be, providing access to a wide range of opportunities and information.

To maximise your time, it’s crucial to engage with a variety of employers. Antonella adds to this,

“So, I’ve never worked in tech before, but I thought I would give it a try. Careers events are a nice environment to chat with people and understand more about your options.
“I would recommend going to a careers event even if you’re not looking for a job. It’s good to have as much information as possible to allow you to make better decisions.”

What is your advice to others?

Originally from Venezuela, Antonella has had to quickly adapt to the ever-changing tech industry and learn at a fast pace. But what is her advice to others?

“Don’t be afraid of trying new things or, most importantly, be rejected. You need to knock on multiple doors for you to be able to find the opportunity that will provide the experience.
“At school, you are taught the theory. When you are looking for a job, you gain a lot of practical skills. At some point, you may have to find the opportunity yourself without a crutch.
“Even if you lack experience, you need to explore and dare to make the first step.”
